It's a Wonderful Afterlife

Gurinder Chadha / UK / 2010 / 100 min

A good marriage is what every Indian mother wants for her daughter and what one loving Indian mother would kill for in Gurinder Chadha’s delightful IT’S A WONDERFUL AFTERLIFE, a lightly macabre mash-up of CARRIE, classic Ealing Studios comedy and Bollywood romance. Indian cinema legend Shabana Azmi plays the kindhearted killer Mrs. Sethi, who is driven to serial murder after her beloved daughter, Roopi, is belittled and humiliated while attempting to find a husband. Mrs. Sethi’s victims, each dispatched in a culinary fashion, reappear as ghosts and reveal that they are stuck on Earth until their murderer dies. As stubborn as she is deadly, Mrs. Sethi refuses to die until her daughter is married, so when Roopi catches the eye of the handsome Detective Inspector (Sendhil Ramamurthy, HEROES) investigating the murders, the spirits must help Mrs. Sethi evade detection and encourage a proper romance, rather than a proper inquiry. The entertaining cast also includes Jimi Mistry (THE GURU), Sanjeev Bhaskar (THE KUMARS AT NO. 42) and Sally Hawkins (HAPPY-GO-LUCKY) as Roopi’s flaky friend.
