Directions in Sound

DIRECTIONS IN SOUND brings together the fiercest, genre-bending artists from the Bay Area and beyond! 2010 was the breakout year for Asian American musicians and the future is looking bright. Our lineup is brimming with emerging talent that will bring down the house. From pulsating electro-pop to forward-pushin’ hip-hop to mind-blowing music videos, you are guaranteed to have sensory overload. 21 and over only.

Originally the Fingerbangerz Crew, the Bangerz are six guys from San Jose who started DJing during lunch breaks at Silver Creek High School over twelve years ago. They soon began playing the club scene, winning battles and major turntable competitions, and released their debut album in 2003 ([VI.R.US]). They collaborate as producers for the Jabbawockeez, a dance crew who were a sensation on MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” and have a long-running show in Las Vegas (MUS.I.C.).

Capturing the eerie drama of The Knife and the sweet darkness of Ladytron, Silver Swans (Ann Yu on vocals and Jon Waters on sampling, guitar and keys) is an electro dream pop project from San Francisco begun in 2007. Their album, “Realize The Ghost,” is soon to make a debut on Tricycle Records.

A West Coast California native, B.Bravo is a driving force in the Modern Funk Movement, spearheaded by LA’s Dam-Funk. His live set includes samplers, synths, keyboards and vocoder. His soulful sounds are mixed with melodic chords and dazzling beats.

Taiyo Na is a singer, songwriter, MC, educator, actor, and producer from New York. Honored by Governor David A. Paterson and the State of New York for his “legacy of leadership to the Asian American community and the Empire State” his albums include “Love Is Growth” (2008) and “Home Word” (a collaboration with California bred hip-hop group Magnetic North, 2010).

A visionary DJ based out of Los Angeles, Rani D thrills audiences with his global sound. His bimonthly “soul in the park” party has built quite a following, featuring selectors and live musicians like Jrocc, Mark de Clive Lowe, Mochilla and more.
